Old Silar bellows camera.

One of the main drawbacks to the widespread use of cameras in ancient times was their large size, which made them difficult to handle and transport. An advance that greatly contributed to the popularisation of cameras in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was the appearance of folding cameras.

These cameras had the lens attached to the end of a bellows that folded into the body of the camera, thus sensibly reducing its size and making it more easily transportable.

The folding system was used for both plate and roll cameras.
